Difficulty rating (out of five): ⏳⏳⏳⏳

Well, did you spot it? Not GROUND in the top row, but that below it are various things that are underground? If you’re anything like me you would have failed to do so, but perhaps I’m just being particularly unobservant this morning.

A reasonably challenging offering I thought, with lots of well hidden definitions and much in the way of lateral thinking required in the wordplay. Not knowing the prog rockers won’t have held anybody up for too long, but separating “wind” from “trapped” to get the definition we were looking for, just to give one example, I suspect will have exercised minds. Which was all as perfectly cryptic and enjoyable as you would like – I suspect this may turn out to be puzzle of the week.

With the aforementioned 8d a close runner-up, I’ll go with 4d, if only for the similarly well disguised (and amusing) definition – “Ruin destroyed a not-unknown Conservative peer (8)”.
