Difficulty rating (out of five): ⏳⏳⏳⏳
Our very own Maize offers up an amazing (groan) puzzle this themed Tuesday, where all the across answers bar the first two were examples of things shown on the 1/5. The themed entries were all otherwise defined, with no odd words / phrases, though it did help undoubtedly to spot the theme (as I did for once fairly early). Of the un-themed downs there’s only one real obscurity, the capital at 21d, and the French required for “Parisian goes” will have been beyond many I suspect, but with a little patience there’s nothing here that won’t have been beyond most solvers. And with lots to reward, it must be said, as the clues were uniformly excellent, with a grid-fill that’s as carefully put together as you’d expect.
CoD? For me it’s got to be 1/5 – “Agency’s foremost duo to guard cinema (6,6)”, if only for the wordplay for 1ac.
All the answers and parsing of the clues can be found in Fifteensquared’s blog from December 2018:
