We've had two stray cats die under our house one year. The first one was in the summer and we noticed a ton of flies in the house, but it was a while before the smell got in. By the time we found the first one he had been dead a couple days. The second one was in the winter and my gf just happened to see the tip of his tail sticking out from under the house, and he seemed to have died more recently. Now we're traumatized and check under the house constantly.
They don't live long sadly, when they're old and cant eat or drink much, they essentially just find a comfortable warm place to die. They like being cozy like a cat or dog, opossums would much rather be comfortable
Had one in a crawlspace once. Didn't find it the first time through. Then I guess it popped. The smell woke me out of a sound sleep. I was ready to burn the house down but found him finally inside an old piece of flex HVAC duct.
