The engineering for this has been around for more than a century. The technology to build it in any affordable fashion has been the problem. Two wheels in front and one in back solve most of the stability problems inherent in a two wheeled design. Trikes with two wheels in back have a serious safety problem with rollover when braking during a turn. At a guess, motorcycle riders hate it simply because it is a tricycle and that inevitably carries emotional baggage from the childhood versions. In the thinking that goes on just below the surface a two wheeler is manly, a three wheeler is for children.
If you don't what the danger, you get a car. The fun about bikes is the danger, if you don't develop the brains and skills to control the bike your not going home
I love the design without compromising the original design of the motorcycle, as I'm not dumb enough to do the stunts shown. But riding it as a cruiser? I wouldn't mind at all.

Advantage for the Piaggio is some versions do not require a motorcycle DL but can be driven with a car DL. (At least in the Netherlands)
