As a person who grew up in the early 90s, I consider The Sundays dream pop as well. My Bloody Valentine leans more towards shoegaze, with their whole wall of sound thing. Although dreampop and shoegaze share similarities, they're also different. Nothing is clearcut, but Dreampop doesn't tend to rely on the fuzzy wall of sound approach, and instead, prefer a bit of reverb, giving their music a sense of dreaminess and expansiveness. And the lyrics are usually easier to make out in dreampop, for the most part. Late 80s bands like The Field Mice, The Ocean Blue, Kitchens of Distinction, and even The Wild Swans (to a degree) are better examples of dreampop, imho. Good examples of modern dreampop bands are Moscow Olympics, Airiel, The Daysleepers, Craft Spells, Wild Nothing, Foxes in Fiction, and Memoryhouse.
I've noticed people tend to categorize shoegaze as being heavier, and dream pop as being shoegaze without fuzz. I tend to ignore these distinctions when writing. To me it's two expressions of the same sound.
