St. Bernards are truly benign, loving, and motivated to help. I can never forget at the age of 10 walking alone in Holy Cross Woods in Dunkirk NY, when I heard behind me the heavy breathing and footballs of a rapidly approaching giant animal, thinking a Bear was after me. Only after he had leapt up and quite gently knocked me down with his huge paws on my shoulders, and proceeded to lick me on the face as I turned to confront the "threat", did I hear the cries of a young lady, assuring me "¡He won't hurt you!". The Swiss(¿I think?) knew what they were doing when they made them "rescue dogs" in the truest sense of that designation. As nice as German Shepherds and Irish Setters are, you just know that their inherent love of alcoholic beverages would be an irresistible temptation, and the Brandy(or whatever they carry in those little barrels attached to their collars) would be consumed in a night of drunken revelry, rather than delivered to the freezing unfortunates lost in the snow.
