Akwa Ibom governor bans street masquerades over growing security fears

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has placed a total ban on street masquerades across the state this festive season, citing rising cases of violence and harassment linked to the Ekpo masquerade groups.

The Ekpo masquerade is a major symbol in Ibibio culture, representing ancestral spirits and traditionally used during community festivals. But in recent weeks, several reports of assault, intimidation and even extortion by some groups have triggered public worry — including the arrest of a masquerade leader earlier this month.

Governor Eno, while announcing the ban, said the government could no longer ignore the security risks, The Nation reported.

“Any masquerade found parading on the streets of Akwa Ibom State will be arrested and prosecuted,” he warned, stressing that the priority is ensuring peace during the festive period.

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions. Some residents say the decision is long overdue and will help keep the streets safe. Others believe the move undermines cultural identity and fear that more traditional activities could be restricted next.
