Story behind the photo: As an enthusiast, I am always on the lookout for creative subjects to capture with my lens. On this instance, I was on a family outing on a hot and clammy day, and I knew even before I stepped out, that it was going to be a challenge to find anything worthy of photographing.
The light was harsh and unflattering to say the least, and the scenery before me was equally uninspiring. As I plodded along, I spotted some tall bullrushes with dark brown female flowers swaying gently in the warm breeze. They looked elegant and graceful, and I felt a spark of inspiration. Perhaps, these could be my creative subject after all.
I decided to faff around with ICM (Intentional Camera Movement), a slow shutter speed technique I had been trying out in the recent past. I used a slow shutter speed and started moving the camera deliberately as I took pictures of the bullrushes. With some adept flicks of the wrist, the bullrushes had been transformed into a dreamy, abstract landscape, with their long stems and feathery tops swirling around in a dizzying pattern. The colours had blurred and blended, creating an impressionistic tapestry of hues that was both beautiful and surreal.
Being grateful for the ability to see something where others see nothing, I was chuffed that I could turn a mundane scene into something creative and artsy. ICM gives me a sense of freedom and playfulness, as I lose myself in experimenting with different movements and angles; but it is easier said, than done.
