Jools band were great they just stood off a little – because its Chaka after all. Great drummer and backing vocalists to give steadiness and oomph. They ain't the NPG but for a big band configured differently – they did a very likable job behind a uniquely talented lady.
The band just weren't in the zone for this one. Think they were a bit out of their depth playing this style of music. I'm sure they are fine musicians in other contexts.
