FINDING TREASURE ISLAND by ROBIN SCOTT-ELLIOT: BLOG TOUR AND REVIEW:

I’m thrilled to embark on this exciting journey through the pages of Robin Scott-Elliot‘s captivating tale, “Finding Treasure Island” and published by the wonderful Cranachan. (and if I may – the quality of the publishing is top notch. The paper is *chefs kiss* I’m a paper nerd and will not apologise) Set in the picturesque town of Braemar, this enchanting story delves into the adventures of Samuel Osbourne, the stepson of the famed Robert Louis Stevenson, affectionately known as “Luly.”

FInding Treasure Island Blurb:

“You’ve sketched a map.”

“It’s our island—no one else but us, boys only. An adventure for us.”

It was more than a sketch. It was detailed. The island had a point at its top and then widened before an inlet cut deep into the land. On its southern end the coast was shaped like an ‘r’, forming a bay in which another, smaller island was drawn…

When Robert Louis Stevenson sketches a map for his stepson Sam while on holiday in Braemar in 1881, it sets them off on the adventure of a lifetime. While Stevenson is inspired to write his first great story, Treasure Island, that holiday, Sam has a treasure hunt of his own to pursue, guided through the hidden forests and dangerous glens of the Cairngorms by the mystical Jen Hawkins.

The missing memoir of Sam Osbourne, which reveals his part in the birth of the greatest adventure story written, still loved 150 years later, Finding Treasure Island is a life-changing story and adventure in pursuit of buried treasure and more.

Finding Treasure Island: My Review

Sam finds himself in the tranquil yet seemingly mundane setting of the Scottish Highlands, where the only excitement comes from his stepfather’s writing pursuits and the watchful eyes of his family. But Sam’s world takes an unexpected turn when he crosses paths with Jen Hawkins, a spirited local girl who knows the woods of Braemar like the back of her hand. With a penchant for thrilling escapades, Jen ignites the spark of adventure in Sam’s life. Together, they embark on a treasure hunt in the hidden glens and forests of the Cairngorms, just as Luly’s newest story starts to take shape.

What I adore most about this book is the endearing relationships that Sam shares with the people around him. His deep affection for Luly, who often seems lost in thought or plagued by health issues, is really touching. Sam and Jen may appear different on the surface, but their shared longing for adventure and treasure binds them together, forging an unbreakable bond.

Finding Treasure Island” is a delightful fusion of humor, emotion, and warmth and reading it replicates the fuzziness akin to sipping a comforting cup of hot chocolate. It transports readers to the picturesque Braemar, introducing a cast of charming characters and offering a glimpse into the genesis of one of literature’s greatest adventures.

I really enjoyed Sam Osbourne as the central character, he adds depth to the story. It sheds light on the untold aspects of the creation of Stevenson’s legendary tale, “Treasure Island.” We get to witness the magic of storytelling through Sam’s perspective and experience the thrill of discovery alongside him. This fresh take on a classic adventure enriches the reader’s connection to the beloved original.

Can I just say as well that there are some fantastic black and white photos included at the rear of the book which you need to see, they are utterly fascinating. And no I will not spoil them here. NO. STOP IT!

During my previous chat with the talented author, Robin Scott-Elliot, (which you can read here) he shared his inspiration and experiences. Living in a small Scottish town with a menagerie of pets, his love for swimming and the outdoors shines through in his storytelling. His journey from a sports journalist to a children’s author was motivated by his children’s requests for stories during car rides—a testament to the enduring power of storytelling.

Aspiring writers will find wisdom in Robin’s words about the importance of practice, accepting criticism, and never giving up on their dreams. His experiences in the world of journalism emphasise the impact of words and the necessity of thoughtful writing.

“Finding Treasure Island” is not just a delightful children’s book; it’s a celebration of adventure, imagination, and the transformative power of storytelling. As you dive into this enchanting tale, you’ll be reminded that every great adventure begins with a single step into the unknown. So grab your compass and prepare for an unforgettable journey through the pages of this delightful book.

Highly recommended for readers of all ages who treasure the magic of adventure, friendship, and the allure of hidden treasures.

From the Author

“I grew up on Robert Louis Stevenson stories, and the more I read of him the more he seemed almost as large a character as those he created. Stevenson’s the master storyteller and I began to imagine how he might have created his first great tale: reading freshly written chapters to Sam each night in their cottage in Braemar, the fire crackling and rain lashing the windows…” Robin Scott-Elliot

Robin Scott-Elliot

Robin Scott-Elliot has been a sports journalist for over 25 years with the BBC, ITV, The Sunday Times, The Independent and ‘i’, covering every sport you can think of and a few you probably can’t. The highlight was the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics; the lowlight turning up at the wrong stadium to cover Scotland’s football team.

Finding Treasure Island is Robin’s fifth historical-fiction novel after Sweet Skies (Everything with Words, 2023), The Tzar’s Curious Runaways (Telegraph Children’s Book of the Year 2019), The Acrobats of Agra and Hide and Seek (Spectator Children’s Book of the Year 2021).
