A classic Recipe Taken up a notch!

When I think of deviled eggs, I can’t help but think of my great-grandma. Almost every holiday or family gathering featured her famous deviled eggs, and lucky me—I got the honor of learning her “secret” recipe. I’d sit at her kitchen table, carefully peeling hard-boiled eggs while she worked her magic on the filling.

To this day, I can’t quite recreate her exact version, even though I know the recipe by heart. But maybe that’s the beauty of family recipes—you learn them, love them, and eventually put your own spin on them.

This recipe is my take on the classic deviled eggs I grew up with, but with a spicy little twist!

Prep Tips and Tricks

  • Prep hard boiled eggs, or buy them ahead of time. Then, all you have to do is make the filling!
  • Steam the eggs. Skip boiling, and place the eggs in a steamer basket over boiling water for 12-13 minutes. This makes them even easier to peel!
  • Center the yolk for an even filling. Store the eggs on their sides (instead of upright in the carton) before boiling to help keep the yolk centered, creating prettier deviled eggs. (I just learned this, and it works!)
  • Use a deviled egg carrier, or line a container with parchment paper and store eggs in a single layer to prevent shifting if traveling with these spicy deviled eggs.

Ingredients and Substitutions

Below is an overview of the ingredients and instructions to make spicy deviled eggs. Please be sure to scroll down to the recipe card for the complete details!

Ingredients laid out for spicy deviled eggs including hard-boiled eggs, chipotle sauce, mayo, lime, and spices
  • Large Eggs – You can’t have deviled eggs without eggs!
  • Mayonnaise – Use a high-quality, olive oil or avocado oil based full-fat mayo.
  • Spices – Ground mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper enhance the savory, spicy taste of the filling.

Ingredient Swap: You can swap the mustard powder for Dijon mustard if you have it on hand.

  • Chipotle Sauce – Use the sauce from canned chipotle peppers and then save the peppers to use in chipotle peach salsa or Mexican sweet potato beef stewSwap: Swap chipotle sauce for ½ teaspoon chipotle seasoning or your favorite hot sauce.
  • Lime Juice – Freshly squeezed is best! The acidity adds a nice, bright taste to balance some of the heaviness of the fats.

How to Make Spicy Deviled Eggs

  1. Make hard boiled eggs. Submerge the eggs in cold water in a saucepan and bring the liquid to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, cover the pan, turn off the heat, and let the eggs sit. Once cooked, transfer them to a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process.
  2. Peel and slice. Once cool, peel the shells and slice the eggs in half lengthwise. Gently remove the yolks and place them in a mixing bowl. Set the white halves aside, and use a fork to mash the yolks until crumbly.
  1. Make the filling. In a small bowl, mix the mayo, chipotle sauce, ground mustard, garlic, lime juice, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper until smooth. Add the mixture to the bowl of egg yolks and mash again until creamy and well combined.

Pro-Tip: Use an immersion blender or food processor for an extra smooth consistency!

  1. Assemble. Spoon or pipe the egg yolk mixture into the halved egg whites. Then, top each egg half with chopped cilantro or green onion and red pepper flakes for garnish. Enjoy!

Note: Feel free to switch up the garnishes. Pickled jalapeños, fresh chives, relish, paprika, or a sprinkle of cayenne pepper all taste great, too!

Common Questions

Can I make chipotle deviled eggs ahead of time?

You can make hard boiled eggs three days in advance and store them in the fridge. You can also prepare the filling a day ahead of time and store it in a separate airtight container. Then, just stuff the eggs right before serving. Once assembled, leftovers will last for one to two days but become soggier the longer they sit.

Can I double the recipe for spicy deviled eggs?

Yes, but be sure to gradually add salt to the filling, using ¼ teaspoon at a time to avoid oversalting. Then, if the filling seems too dry, mix in an extra ½ to 1 tablespoon of mayo and a splash of lime juice.

Notes

Flavor and Texture Tips –  When doubling the recipe (12 eggs), add salt gradually—¼ teaspoon at a time—to avoid over-salting. If the filling seems too dry, mix in an extra ½ tablespoon to 1 tablespoon of mayo and a splash of lime juice for a smoother consistency. For an ultra-creamy texture, blend the filling with a hand mixer or food processor.

Substitutions: Swap chipotle sauce for ½ teaspoon chipotle seasoning or your favorite hot sauce. Use our homemade chipotle mayo or a store-bought spicy mayo as a substitute for the mayo + chipotle sauce combo.

Storage & Prep Tips:  Hard-boil the eggs in advance and store them in the fridge for up to 3 days before making the deviled eggs.  Prepare the filling up to a day ahead and refrigerate in an airtight container.
