Book Review of 100 First Words for Little Coloradans
The Children’s Book Review
What to Expect: Colorado, Local Culture, Landmarks, Nature, Vocabulary, State Pride.
What better way to introduce the littlest Coloradans (and their parents) to the Centennial State than through a lively, word-focused book? 100 First Words for Little Coloradans captures the unique spirit and geography of Colorado in an accessible and entertaining way.
In Jessica and Shea Speer’s creation, readers are immersed in the state’s iconic landscapes and culture and introduced to vocabulary ranging from mountainous to Mile High City. The book explores all things Colorado, from the widely recognizable (Columbine, Broncos, Rocky Mountain National Park) to local favorites (“ski bum,” “Subie,” “green chili,” and “powder”).
In addition to the standard first words (wolf, flag, camping), Speer and Speer have curated a wonderfully localized collection of terms that are essential to the Colorado experience. Concepts like “altitude sickness” and landmarks such as “Rabbit Ears,” “Dinosaur Ridge,” and the “Eisenhower Tunnel” not only broaden a toddler’s vocabulary but also serve as a fun, educational refresher for adult “transplants” who want to learn the local lingo.
Gareth Williams’ illustrations add a vibrant, engaging touch to the collection. He brings the state’s antics and natural beauty to life with playful images that reinforce the word-object connection—from the “moose” and “bighorn sheep” to the “hot air balloon” and “Casa Bonita.” The artwork is both clear and fun, making word association a breeze.
This well-crafted board book is a perfect way to celebrate state pride and prepare young readers for a lifetime of exploration in the Rockies!
