First Quarter Sees Record-Breaking Number of Ransomware Attacks

March had a record-breaking, 107 reported ransomware attacks, an 81 percent increase compared to last year, global cybersecurity company Blackfog stated. The company which started tracking ransomware in 2020, released its quarterly ransomware report this week. The healthcare sector continued to be the most targeted, Rebecca Harpur wrote.

According to BlackFog data, 278 disclosed attacks occurred in the first quarter, up 45 percent from last year.

The most prominent ransomware group behind the attacks was RansomHub.RansomHub emerged in early 2024 and rapidly became the most prolific RaaS group, replacing two of the previously most active groups – LockBit and Alphv/Blackcat,” Steve Alder reported for The HIPAA Journal. However, Alder noted, “RansomHub’s dominance could well be coming to an end. Several cybersecurity firms have reported internal problems at RansomHub between the operators and their affiliates.”

Cybersecurity firm CYBLE noted that it observed a potential leadership shift in ransomware attacks along with the emergence of new threat actors. “[C]onsistent application of good security practices is key for building organizational resilience and limiting the impact of attacks that do occur,” the organization advised.
