Anything by Rebecca Stead and Gracey Zhang

Happy Wednesday! I’m grateful Newbery Medalist Rebecca Stead and Caldecott Honor artist Gracey Zhang stopped by to finish my sentences. We discussed Anything, gateways, honesty, story, and more. I wrote the words in purple, Gracey wrote the words in black, and Rebecca wrote the words in green. Thank you, Rebecca and Gracey!

Anything’s cover is full of possibilities of wishes

Rebecca Stead has written a world where children are safe to be vulnerable

Picture books are Gateways

Anything tells the story of a child who is given three wishes but needs just one more. It’s a story about imagination, about change, and – mostly! – about love. It’s a moving story about moving. I hope.

Gracey Zhang’s illustrations are beautiful, honest, playful and like nothing else I’ve seen. They’re something truly new, but they pull at me the way certain picture books did when I was a kid. I know that if I had seen these drawings when I was six years old, I would still remember them today. The more you look, the more you see.

Story is all about the magic of connection. Stories move past our assumptions, past our defenses, and, if we’re lucky, they burrow straight into our hearts.

Congratulations, Rebecca and Gracey!
