How to make a fractal branch from scratch

How to make a fractal branch from scratch

Since many of you have asked how I make these things, here is an explanation of how to make a branch from scratch. It only requires two transforms, so it’s an easy fractal.

STEP 1 Download and install Apophysis 7X, it’s free

sourceforge.net/projects/apophysis7x/

STEP 2 Start Apophysis 7X

STEP 3 The opening window is your main window. In top bar you see a value field for the resolution, this only applies to your window (not the eventual end result) and to speed things up while you are working on your fractal, make sure it is set to value 5 (higher values will just slow down your work). If you want to have a look at what you work looks like at higher values before rendering the end result, you can later set it to eg value 50 for a trial run)

STEP 4 In the top menu bar click File → New → Blank Flame and click OK.

STEP 5 Hit the F5 function key on your keyboard to open the Adjustment Window in which you do the following:

– In the Scale field, enter the value 15.

– Click the Gradient tab. At the bottom of it you see a gradient with a drop down sign next to it, click it to open the gradient drop down menu and choose color 578 Golden Green.

– Click the Rotate button, which will open a drop down menu. Select "Hue" and move the slider 14 units to the right to make the green a bit more vivid.

– Click the Rendering button and set gamma to 3.25 and Brightness to 4.81 (you may have to adjust this later on since how bright this will be depends on the settings of your computer screen)

STEP 6 Hit the F4 function key on your keyboard to open the Editor Window in which you do the following:

step 6.1 Transform 1

– Transform 1 (red triangle) is already in place.

– In the Weight field enter value 0.68

– In the Variations tab, Linear should already be set to value 1, do not change it.

– In the Colors tab,
set transform color to 0.338 and
the color speed to 0

– In the Transform" tab, enter the following values to move red triangle to a different position of your workspace (you can later just click and drag the red triangle to whatever position you wish to see what effect this has, but for this fractal branch you need the following position) — pay attention to the minus sign with some of these values:

X: 0.845048 and 0.119006
Y: 0.119006 and 0.845048
O: 0.921615 and 0.225115

step 6.2 Transform 2

– Add a new transform (a new triangle) by clicking the triangular icon with a plus sign next to it in the top menu (it probably is the second one from the left), you now have a yellow triangle in your work space too.

– in the Weight field enter value 0.32

– in the Variations tab

set Linear to value 0 (zero)
and set Foci to value 1

– in the Colors tab,
set the transform color to 1.000 and
color speed to 0

– in the Transform tab, enter the following values:

X: 0.369175 and 0.111725
Y: 0.111725 and 0.369175
O: 0.169862 and 0.300636

STEP 7 Go to your main window of Apophysis,

You will see the branch somewhere in the top right, click it and drag it towards the center of the window

If you want to increase its size, go to the Adjustment Window (F5) and fill out a larger Scale value, eg 23

STEP 8 Rendering your fractal

In the main window of Aphosysis you will see a cartwheel in the top menu (probably the fourth icon from the left), click the cartwheel.

Set size width 1024 and height to whatever it says to maintain the aspect ratio.

Quality density to 1000, filter radius 0.4, oversample NOT higher than 2

Hit start and let it render the fractal.

And ta-da, this will produce your fractal.

Don’t forget to save your fractal flame !

STEP 9 Add a background colour

You can then add a background to it (black usually works best) with any graphic software. If you don’t have one, GIMP is free and it’s as good as Paintshop Pro, Photoshop or similar software www.gimp.org/
