Mae Murray in “Elizabethan” costume, in old scrapbook found at Goodwill

Mae Murray in

I found this scrapbook at Goodwill on Monday. $12.99. When I opened it up, I was amazed — it is full of hundreds of clippings of movie and stage stars from the late 1910s and maybe early 1920s. (The only dates I’ve found in it so far are from 1916, though.)

Someone compiled a scrapbook from issues of Photoplay and other magazines. Many times she cut out the photographs precisely, and glued the images into the book. But most of the images are just loose, tucked between the pages.

The condition of the clippings is amazing. The paper is not brittle or yellowed. Wherever this book has been for the last 90 years, it was kept safe.

The lighting here looks a little streaky because the light was shining through the curtains in my dining room.

Eventually I will scan everything from the book. For now, here’s a taste of a small part of it. There are many, many more pictures, though.

This is Mae Murray, in the film To Have and To Hold, pictured in Picture Progress magazine in May 1916. This was her motion picture debut.
