*Cold War Contest Entry* Scottish Industrial Armaments – Neon Line – BR-556
Introduced in 1986 as part of a NATO-wide design brief, the BR-556 was the weapon that made Scottish Industrial Armaments a global player in the defence industry.
The challenging brief stated the requirement of NATO forces to be equipped with a compact, integrally suppressed weapon capable of piercing body armour, primarily for use in covert operations.
Packed with technical innovations, SIA developed a lightweight frame that insulated the titanium alloy suppressed barrel, allowing the weapon to be passed through metal detectors without issue. The lower receiver houses a laser sight system to aid hip aiming accuracy, operated by a depression pad on the grip.
The profile of the weapon was designed with concealment in mind and features a recessed channel along the top edge for shoulder aiming and rounded corner edges to facilitate a footprint shorter than a standard MP5. The weapon’s party piece is its storage in custom built false bottom business briefcases.
The select fire automatic weapon is chambered in subsonic, armour-piercing 5.56x45mm ammunition and accepts all standardised NATO STANAG magazines (weapon shown unloaded).
