I’m steeping four bottles of snaps (schnapps) for Christmas. Unlike American schnapps, which is more of a sugary liqueur, scandinavian snaps is merely vodka flavored with spices or fruit. The chosen ingredient dictates how long the snaps must steep. The lemon snaps, for instance, will be ready in a few days, whereas the cranberry and blackberry will require a couple weeks (and won’t age to perfection for 3 or 4 months). If you drink snaps, you must sing a snapsvisa (schnapps-song) — ‘Hej tomtegubbar‘ (Hi all of you santas) is common for Christmas snaps-drinking. And there’s always the classic, Helan går! (Bottles courtesy of the local thrift shop (but originally from Pier 1).)
