Sydney Taylor Notable Books in the Picture Book Category

Welcome to day 4 of the Sydney Taylor Book Awards Blog Tour! I asked Danielle Sharkan and Selina Alko, author and illustrator of Sharing Shalom; Linda Leopold Strauss and Tim Smart, author and illustrator of Everybody’s Book: The Story of the Sarajevo Haggadah; and Mark Kornblatt and Nanette Regan, author and illustrator of Mr. Katz and Me to finish my sentences! I wrote the words in purple, and they wrote the words in black. Thank you!

Sharing Shalom | Words by Danielle Sharkan and illustrations by Selina Alko

For Danielle Sharkan:

Sharing Shalom tells the story of hope for humanity, light over darkness, love overcoming hate. When Leila, a proud Jewish girl, witnesses an antisemitic incident at her synagogue, she becomes ashamed of her Jewish identity -until she notices the vibrant differences of her classmates, and sees the community coming together to help repair and rebuild.

Selina Alko’s illustrations capture the essence of the story in a colorful and child-friendly way.

The Association of Jewish Libraries has an important mission to promote and support the spread of Jewish representation throughout the literary world.

For Selina Alko:

I hope Sharing Shalom helps more people – Jews and non-Jews alike – understand how antisemitism can play out and how Jewish children internalize that specific type of hate targeted to their community.

The art for Sharing Shalom was created after I took my daughter to Israel for the first time and we both got our Bat Mitvahs. Even though I went to Hebrew school as a child I didn’t have a Bat Mitvah––a lifelong regret. In Israel, I was inspired by the Mediterranean palette of rich blues, turquoises and greens, and I came home with Hebrew newspapers to integrate into my mixed media collage paintings.

Libraries are wonderful havens for children to discover books in which they see themselves and learn about others. I hope this book falls into the hands of many children of different cultural backgrounds increasing the awareness of antisemitism as one type of discrimination.

Everybody’s Book: The Story of the Sarajevo Haggadah | Words by Linda Leopold Strauss and illustrations by Tim Smart

For Linda Leopold Strauss:

Everybody’s Book: The Story of the Sarajevo Haggadah is the true story of a hand-painted Haggadah, a wedding gift to a Jewish couple in Spain around 1350. The Haggadah left Spain with the family when they were expelled by the Inquisition and wound up in Italy, then Sarajevo, Bosnia, where it was treasured not only by Jews, but also by the Catholics, Orthodox Christians, and Muslims that populated the city. Over the years it was in danger many times – a Croat Catholic director and the Muslim curator of the Bosnian Museum saved it from the Nazis during WWII, and it spent the war years hidden in a mosque high in the hills over the city. During the Bosnian War it was in the National Museum when the museum was bombed by the Serbs, but it was taken to safety, its whereabouts unknown for a long time until the Muslim president of Bosnia brought it out of hiding for a multicultural Passover seder which was celebrated despite war planes and bombs flying overhead. Ultimately it was restored by the United Nations and is now cherished by the whole family of nations as a symbol of “hope that kindness and understanding would be stronger than hate.” It was a book created for one family: it is now truly “everybody’s book.” I hope that with Passover coming, families might choose to read this book aloud at their seders – the history of this beautiful Haggadah should be of interest to children and adults alike, especially at a time when there is so much division in the world.

Tim Smart’s illustrations really enhance the story above. They are lively, colorful, true to the history of the Haggadah, and really pleasing to the eye. As one reviewer said, the illustrations “depict serious historical events and capture the beauty of the Haggadah, while remaining bright and child-friendly.”

The Association of Jewish Libraries is doing a wonderful job of promoting the many books published each year that depict the Jewish experience, books for all ages, fiction and non-fiction. I am very grateful to the Association for the extra attention it brings to my book (and others!) via the Sydney Taylor awards.

Mr. Katz and Me | Words by Mark Kornblatt and illustrations by Nanette Regan

Mark Kornblatt responded by voice . . .

Mr. Katz and Me tells the story . . .

The Association of Jewish Libraries . . .

Nanette Regan’s illustrations . . .

For Nanette Regan:

The illustrations for Mr. Katz and Me were a real collaboration between me and Rabbi Debbie Rodin Cohen, the editor at Apples and Honey Press, she had quite clear ideas about the characters but also gave me plenty of freedom to develop the imaginary birds that are used throughout the book.

Marc Kornblatt wrote a beautiful intergenerational story that was a real honour to work on.

Libraries are maybe the most important places in the world! They offer knowledge, adventure and community. Most importantly, libraries are for everyone!
