The tawny owl (Strix aluco) is a medium-sized owl species with a distribution from Europe to Western Siberia and Iran. It is also found in Southeast Asia. In Central Europe, the tawny owl is, together with the long-eared owl, the most common owl. It is only absent in areas with few trees.
Tawny Owls need richly structured landscapes as breeding habitats, in which woods and groups of trees alternate with open areas. It is a cavity-nesting bird that breeds not only in tree cavities but also in wall holes, rock cavities and attics. It prefers mice, but can change its diet to small birds if mice are scarce.
A characteristic feature of this crepuscular and nocturnal owl species is its stocky shape with a round head and bark-like plumage colouring. From September to November and in early spring, the territorial song of the male can be heard from far away.
The tawny owl was Bird of the Year 2017 in Germany.

Der Waldkauz (Strix aluco) ist eine mittelgroße Eulenart mit einer Verbreitung von Europa bis nach Westsibirien und Iran. Er kommt außerdem in Südostasien vor. In Mitteleuropa ist der Waldkauz gemeinsam mit der Waldohreule die häufigste Eule. Er fehlt lediglich in baumarmen Gebieten.
Waldkäuze benötigen als Brutareal reich strukturierte Landschaften, in denen sich Wälder und Baumgruppen mit offenen Flächen abwechseln. Er ist ein Höhlenbrüter, der neben Baumhöhlen auch in Mauerlöchern, Felshöhlen sowie Dachböden brütet. Er frisst bevorzugt Mäuse, kann aber seine Ernährung bei Mäusemangel auf Kleinvögel umstellen.
Kennzeichnend für diese dämmerungs- und nachtaktive Eulenart ist eine gedrungene Gestalt mit rundem Kopf und einer rindenähnlichen Gefiederfärbung. Von September bis November sowie im zeitigen Frühjahr ist der Reviergesang des Männchens weithin hörbar.
Der Waldkauz war in Deutschland Vogel des Jahres 2017.
