For everyone who asked – I’ll try to work on a detailed tutorial with screen shots, but it really is very easy. I’ll try to do a quick step by step here;
1.
First you have to find some textures that you like – either download files online (search for ‘photoshop textures" or try www.textureking.com or www.deviantart.com) or take some of your own (try taking a picture of brick, concrete, a fabric you like, wrinkled paper, wood….anything with a pattern or texture to it).
2. Open the picture you want to work on in photoshop and then open your texture or textures (this pic used three different texture files I think, although I usually just use one).
3. Use your "move" tool to drag the texture onto your picture (you will see the texture layer in your layer palate)
4. Hit "CTRL-T" to Transform and drag the corners of your texture layer to match the size of your photo. Apply the transformation.
5.
Adjust the opacity of your texture layer to suit. Don’t worry if the texture is too heavy in some areas, as you will use a layer mask to handle that – just get it so the majority of the picture has the right level of texture for your desired end result. You can always adjust this up or down later.
6. Apply a layer mask to your texture layer and select a round, soft brush. Paint black on any areas you want to bring back to the original (like skin tones for instance) varying your opacity to get the look you want. Since you are doing this on a mask, you can switch to white and paint back any area where you want to bring back the texture, or if you end up going beyond the area you were trying to mask. It’s really trial and error at this point.
7. Add any other texture layers you want to add – and add layer masks to each.
8. Work with all your texture layers and masks to fine tune the look. Just play and have fun till you like what you see.
9. After finishing my texture work, I usually play a bit more with curves, levels, colour balance etc to get the image to look exactly the way I want.
If you play – please post a link for me to see your end result!
