La parola "transumanza" deriva dal verbo transumare, ossia "attraversare", "transitare sul suolo". Il verbo è costituito con l’accostamento del prefisso latino trans che vuol dire "al di lĂ "/"attraverso", e della parola latina humus che vuol dire "suolo"/"terreno"
.Il piĂ¹ antico cammino della transumanza pare sia quello della val Senales, in Alto Adige, risalente alla preistoria
Con l’avvento della moderna zootecnia e l’allevamento intensivo direttamente negli allevamenti l’attivitĂ di transumanza si è fortemente ridotta. Al giorno d’oggi è praticata soltanto in limitate zone italiane, specialmente in alcune localitĂ alpine e prealpine.

The oldest path of transhumance seems to be that of the Val Senales, in South Tyrol, dating back to prehistoric times
With the advent of modern animal husbandry and intensive farming directly on the farms, the activity of transhumance has been greatly reduced. Nowadays it is practiced only in limited Italian areas, especially in some alpine and pre-alpine locations.
