Merrick Premium Grain Free Dry Adult Dog Food

Delicate Care Sensitive Skin or Stomach, hard to get and a bit expensive you need to look up the website to find stockists. One of the few grain free that did wonders for one of our beagles that had lots of skin sensitivities, also used it for our other beagle and you could see almost immediate improvement in his coat. The other one that worked for our beagles for a change was Taste of the Wild Pacific stream but I think it has a high salt content so we stopped using g it.

Whatever she eats has to be Salmon and grain free. Even on her daily dose of Apoquel, she’ll start itching if she eats anything else. Currently she’s on American Journey Salmon and Sweet Potatoes. And I’ve heard don’t do grain-free from her vet enough. She’s 17 already and before we switched and her allergies were out of control, her quality of life sucked.

Frequently Asked Questions – Best Foods for Beagles with Allergies

1. What are the most common food allergens for Beagles?

The most frequent culprits of food allergies in Beagles are proteins such as beef, chicken, dairy, and lamb. Grains like wheat and corn can also trigger allergic reactions. Identifying and avoiding these allergens is key to managing symptoms.

2. How can I tell if my Beagle has a food allergy?

Common signs include itchy skin, excessive licking or chewing (especially paws), recurring ear infections, gastrointestinal issues like diarrhea or vomiting, and a dull coat. A veterinarian may recommend an elimination diet to confirm food allergies.

3. What are the best hypoallergenic food options for allergic Beagles?

Limited ingredient diets (LID), hydrolyzed protein foods, and novel protein sources such as duck, venison, or salmon are ideal. These diets minimize exposure to common allergens and reduce inflammatory responses.

4. Are grain-free diets good for Beagles with allergies?

Not necessarily. While some Beagles benefit from a grain-free diet, especially if they have a diagnosed grain allergy, others may do well on diets with whole, easily digestible grains like rice or oats. Consult your vet before switching.

5. Can homemade dog food help manage my Beagle’s allergies?

Yes, homemade diets allow precise control over ingredients, making it easier to avoid allergens. However, it’s crucial to work with a veterinary nutritionist to ensure the diet is balanced and meets all of your Beagle’s nutritional needs.

6. Should I use supplements to support my allergic Beagle’s diet?

Omega-3 fatty acids (from fish oil), probiotics, and skin-supporting vitamins like E and biotin can reduce inflammation and improve skin health. Always consult your vet before adding any supplement to your dog’s routine.

7. How long does it take to see improvement after switching foods?

It typically takes 6 to 8 weeks for symptoms to noticeably improve once an allergen is removed from the diet. During this period, it’s vital to avoid all sources of the suspected allergen even treats.
