We haven’t had an IFC Midnight movie since 2022. What happened to this label?
What we have been able to figure out is that the movie industry is in the middle of a shift. That goes for theatrical releases, indies, and streaming. Each studio is experimenting with how to best get their products in front of audiences for maximum profit. The science behind that hasn’t been figured out yet, but with A24 and Neon’s recent titles doing well in theaters and on streaming, they might be leading the way for companies like IFC to succeed.
In an interview for IndieWire back in 2022, then-AMC Studios (which owns IFC and Shudder) president Dan McDermott had this to say.
“In these choppy waters of the media business, we are no different than Warner Bros. Discovery, Disney, or Netflix,” said McDermott. “Everybody is dealing with this moment of reflection and correction in our business. We are smaller and more nimble, so we’ve been able to pivot really quickly. We are in a profit-making position. We’re having a very positive 2023 from a financial perspective and feel we continue to do so.”
That being said, we haven’t seen an IFC Midnight movie in a long time, and that is probably because the company is throwing all of its money behind Shudder originals. So, we thought we would take you down memory lane and showcase some of the best in IFC Midnight’s catalog.
