Callaway Opus SP wedges have been launched for 2025 as an upgraded model with a new “Spin Pocket” construction for the second generation.
Launched 12 months on from the original version of Callaway’s Opus wedges, the SP model is known as Spin Pocket due to the new clubhead construction.
An increased center of gravity delivers a lower launch and increased from the Opus SP, while other notable design changes have been introduced for improved performance.
The Spin Pocket wedge has what is known as a Shape Six clubhead design, a reintroduced X grind and enhanced groove design and spacing.
Callaway Opus SP Wedges Design & Features
The Callaway Opus SP wedges have been redesigned from the original model to deliver enhanced spin control through an innovative Spin Pocket construction.
The Opus SP has new two-piece head design with a Spin Pocket cavity underneath the lower face, which has meant that weight is shifted higher in the clubhead.
The original Opus did not have the Spin Pocket design feature and the result of the chance is that the center of gravity (CG) has been raised to give lower launch and increased spin.
The Opus SP also has a newly designed “Shape Six” head shape for gap and pitching wedges, which now blend better with modern irons and transition from irons to wedges.
Opus SP wedges now feature a new groove angle of 17 degrees with tighter spacing and a deeper cross-hatch laser etched pattern on the Spin Gen 2.0 face.
The tweaks of the groove design means there is more consistent spin from rough and open-face shots particularly.
Callaway have brought back the versatile X grind with 12 degrees of bounce and heel/toe relief, taking the total grind options to five along with the C, S, T and W.
There are nine loft options available in the Opus SP ranging from 48 degrees to 64 degrees, and are available in chrome or black shadow colour options.
Callaway Opus SP Wedges: Are they any good?
The Opus wedges have proven exceptionally popular over the last 12 months having succeeded the Jaws wedges, but Callaway have stood still.
The design has been notably tweaked with a Spin Pocket design, altered clubhead shape, refined groove technology and a lower launch and higher spin.
They SP model really does build on what the Opus offered and we were very impressed with just how more consistent this latest version was when testing.
