Ping BunkR Wedge (Unique Bunker Model Reviewed)

The Ping BunkR wedge is a specialized club designed to simplify bunker shots for high-handicappers and golfers who struggle in the sand. How does the unique model work?

After the success of the Ping ChipR for wedge play around the course for handicap golfers, a first-ever bunker wedge has been launched with the BunkR unveiled in March 2025

With a high loft, high bounce, wide sole and a lightweight shaft, Ping have made it easier for golfers to maintain speed and escape sand traps more easily.

It’s been a busy time for Ping with the launch of the G440 drivers, woods, hybrids and irons and Scottsdale putters already in 2025, but how does the BunkR stack up?

Ping BunkR Wedge Specs & Designs

The BunkR wedge has been launched as an ideal option for beginners and golfers lacking confidence in bunkers and falls firmly in the game-improving sector.

The wedge is designed to offer a square-face setup for easy use, making it forgiving and reliable as well as easy to get out of bunkers.

Ping BunkR

With 64 degrees of loft and 14.5 degrees of bounce, the BunkR is designed to help lift the ball out of the sand effortlessly without requiring an open clubface or adjusted stance.

There is a wide sole design which prevents digging into the sand on contact with the oversized design ensuring consistent escapes even on mishits.

Ping have included MicroMax Grooves seen in some of their leading models like the S159 wedges, and the grooves on the face enhance spin and control on landing.

Ping BunkR Face

A lightweight Z-115 shaft ensures all golfers can maintain clubhead speed through impact, which is often a significant cause of bunker issues.

Ping BunkR Wedge Review: Is it any good?

First things first, the BunkR is designed for performance over appearance and is designed as a solution for golfers who struggle in bunkers.

Unlike most wedges that require an open face and stance adjustments in the bunkers, the BunkR performs optimally with a square face and makes it much easier for less experienced golfers in the sand.

Ping BunkR Wedge

According to Ping’s stats, golfers using the BunkR hit 11% more shots inside the target and left 6% fewer in the bunker compared to standard wedges.

That’s because the 64 degrees creates a high launch angle, allowing the ball to easily clear tall bunker lips and land softly on the green. It also helps generate consistent height and spin for greater control.
