Android 16 may soon let you control screen brightness for HDR content

Google is seemingly testing a significant HDR content-related feature for Android 16 that will enable users to control the screen brightness. They can finally customize the display brightness for HDR pictures or clips to match their preferences.

HDR refers to High Dynamic Range. It generally captures, processes, and displays a wider range of brightness and contrast than the SDR (Standard Dynamic Range). Thus, it shows clearer and more detailed images or videos in bright/dark areas.

But the technique demands higher screen brightness to accommodate a wider range of luminance, from very bright highlights to deep shadows, to deliver more realistic and vivid visuals to users. As a result, you may feel eye fatigue or stress.

To eliminate this problem, Google is seemingly working on a new feature that may control the screen brightness in Android 16 while displaying the HDR content.

MysticLeaks revealed that the Display & Touch section in Android phones will soon get a new page called “Enhanced HDR Brightness”. It has a toggle that will enable users to turn off the brighter side while showing HDR content.

One can also adjust the screen brightness intensity using the slider on the new page. The description of the Enhanced HDR Brightness page reads:

“Brighten and expand the color range and clarity in High Dynamic Range (HDR) images and videos. HDR content will appear brighter.”

Note that the feature hasn’t come into existence yet. Although the shared screenshots suggest that the new capability could debut with the next QPR1 beta update.
