Google is seemingly giving a big makeover to the media output switcher UI with Android 16. The respective segment is getting a redesigned look for the first time. Its UI has been unchanged since its debut with the Android 11 software upgrade.
A media output switcher enables users to easily select or switch between different audio and video output devices. For instance, Bluetooth speakers, cast devices, or even the phone’s built-in speaker. It facilitates seamless switching between handsets.
It immediately pops up on your phone as soon as you tap a chip in the top right corner of any media playback notification. The feature came into existence with Android 11.

Mishaal Rahman (via Android Authority) dug into the Android 16 Beta 4 and found a redesigned media output switcher. Looks like Google is finally giving a major facelift to this feature’s interface in the upcoming software system.
The UI doesn’t show any dramatic changes for the moment, but has certain notable tweaks. The “connect a device” option now appears below the media info at the top. Besides, the volume control slider is thinner, persistent, and shows the device name.

Also, the slider shows a more accurate icon for connected devices. Speakers & Display pill is no longer available in this UI. Now, it displays all the devices straight away without housing them in a long pill, making the UI clutter-free.
For now, only these changes are present in the new media output switcher. It is unclear whether Google will further upgrade this segment or keep it subtle with the latest tweaks. Though we may find a redesigned media switcher with Android 16.
