Google preparing special video chat effects with Android 16
Android 16 Beta 4 hints that Google is working on video chat effects. As per the details, the feature will let you apply some interesting visual and audio effects to any video call. Just make some simple settings on your Android 16-powered device.
Mishaal Rahman (via Android Authority) notes that the new feature is far better than the native video chat effects. It will enable users to apply effects to any video chat application, instead of keeping it exclusive to the device’s system apps.
Inputs reveal that Google is preparing a new Video Chat panel in Android 16 that will enable users to apply visual and audio effects to any video calls in the real-time.
The list of video chat effects includes background blur, portrait relighting, a portrait touch-up, and studio-style mic processing. Android 16 Beta 4 shows certain strings for a new tile in Quick Settings called “Video Chat” with the mentioned effects.

- Background Blur: Blurs your background environment
- Portrait relighting: Improves the lighting on your face
- Portrait touch-up: Retouches your face to remove imperfections
- Studio-style mic: suppresses background noise
Background Blur will bring two options: light and full blur. Other options will have simple on/off toggles. One would be able to access all of these options in the Quick Settings panel. But these effects aren’t live or working at present.
Google could make these new video effects official in the stable Android 16 upgrade. In the meantime, the company could make more effective changes to this section to offer an enhanced video calling experience to users.
