Second Look: A. Lange & Sohne Odysseus Honeygold Watch

One of the few new high-end German A. Lange & Sohne watches for 2025 is the first “showy” version of the brand’s integrated bracelet watch. Known as the A. Lange & Sohne Odysseus Honeygold reference 363.150, this is the first version of the brand’s in-demand “bracelet watch” that isn’t in a silver tone, as the existing versions of the Odysseus were made in steel, titanium, or 18k white gold. More so, this is the first full-precious metal bracelet version of the A. Lange & Sohne Odysseus, as the 18k white gold model came on a strap versus a bracelet. This is, therefore, the first truly “baller” version of the Odysseus, which is something the “stealth wealth” luxury brand doesn’t often do. The A. Lange & Sohne Odysseus watch originally debuted in 2019 in steel.

There is also evidence to suggest that A. Lange & Sohne was watching the fashion market when considering the dial color for this timepiece. To help inspire clothing designers to have matching themes or compatible hues, the fashion industry often rallies around annual color suggestions. Rick from the aBlogtoWatch Weekly Podcast often likes to point these colors out and mentioned that, according to Pantone, the color of the year for 2025 was “mocha mousse.” When asked what new watches from 2025 celebrate this creamy brown, the only one that came to mind was from an unlikely source: the celebrated watchmakers in Glashutte at A. Lange & Sohne. I’ve not asked A. Lange & Sohne directly if this “brown” (as the brand refers to the dial color) was intentionally meant to evoke the Pantone 2025 year color, but the hue is awfully close to mocha mousse, and it does match very nicely with the warm hues of 18k honeygold.

What is “honeygold?” For those who aren’t aware, 18k HONEYGOLD (A. Lange & Sohne has trademarked the term) is a proprietary gold alloy used by A. Lange & Sohne that (as the name implies) has a more honey-yellow gold color and is distinct from either 18k yellow or 18k pink gold. I personally find it very attractive, and from time to time, A. Lange & Sohne likes to create a limited edition of watches using this special gold alloy. Accordingly, the reference 363.150 Odysseus Honeygold is a limited edition of 100 pieces.

On the wrist, the heavy gold feels great given how nicely machined the case and bracelet are. Of course, it is a weighty watch, but in just the right way. Other than the honeygold case and bracelet construction and the brown dial color, nothing has changed about the watch. The case is 40.5mm wide, 11.1mm thick, and water resistant to 120 meters (a somewhat random number that is seemingly inspired by the Patek Philippe Nautilus’ historic 120 meters of water resistance rating). The case and bracelet are clearly more “designed” than most other, comparatively simple and classic A. Lange & Sohne cases, but the overall appeal of this watch is still very much rooted in Saxon watchmaking heritage and style. Note that like other “sports lifestyle bracelet watches,” the Odysseus’ folding bracelet deployant has a handy micro-adjust feature to help with wearing comfort.

Inside the Odysseus is the A. Lange & Sohne designed and manufactured caliber L155.1 automatic movement. Beautiful and crafted with as much care and decoration as other A. Lange & Sohne mechanisms, the L155.1 is nevertheless supposed to be a practical, daily-wear mechanism with convenience in mind. It operates at 4Hz (most Lange movements operate at 3Hz if I recall correctly), and has 50 hours of power reserve. On the face of the watch, the movement indicates the time with subsidiary seconds, and a day/date indicator featuring large calendar apertures along with a “big date” (I think A. Lange & Sohne likes to call it an “outsize date”) window. The Odysseus dial layout is somewhat evocative of A. Lange & Sohne’s cult favorite “digital” Zeitwerk watch models.

Fans of Lange’s 18k HONEYGOLD will probably want this version of the Odysseus because it is the best way to wear the attractive gold color given that this is the first honey gold bracelet produced by the brand. If you already have an Odysseus model, there is perhaps less reason to add this one to your collection unless you simply have a lot of money and finally want a timepiece that merges your interest in niche horology with the desire to show off. The Odysseus Honeygold is beautiful, but it is also expensive, costing a few times that of the same Odysseus watch in steel. Limited to 100 pieces, the reference 363.150 A. Lange & Sohne in 750 Honeygold has a retail price of about 110,000 Euros. See more on the A. Lange & Sohne website.
