Germany alerts Apple, Google to remove unlawful DeepSeek AI app

Germany is warning Apple, Google, and other tech makers to remove the DeepSeek AI app from their app stores. Why? Well, the country thinks that the application can steal German users’ data and transfer it to China for “unlawful activities”.

As per EU data protection rules, DeepSeek AI app – China’s latest artificial intelligence buzz is not worthwhile for Apple and Google. The authorities also asked the tech makers to perform a “timely review” of whether to block the app or not.

EU data protection rules restrict companies from sending data outside the region unless specific safeguards are in place in the countries of arrival. In addition, these guards must fulfill GDPR requirements in Europe.

Berlin’s (Germany) data protection commissioner, Meike Kamp, said that DeepSeek AI can be harmful for Apple, Google, and they should remove it from app stores.

Kamp further added:

“DeepSeek has not been able to convincingly illustrate to my authority that the data of German users is protected in China at a level equivalent to that of the EU. Chinese authorities have extensive access rights to personal data within the sphere of influence of Chinese companies.”

While it is unclear whether German authorities will ban the app, it is currently under “timely review”.

On the other hand, Matt Holman, a specialist in AI and data lawyer at Cripps, wrote an email, suggesting that Germany can soon ban the app for its residents.

“It is certainly possible that this incident could lead to an EU-wide ban because the rules that apply in Germany are the same elsewhere in the EU and also in the UK.”

DeepSeek has gained huge attention right from the start of this year. The first and foremost attention-seeking capability was the usage of Huawei Ascend 910C, more than Nvidia chips in the R1 AI large language model.

Moreover, it claims to offer better features over ChatGPT and Gemini in many ways, including cost-effective facilities.
