Huawei is pouring efforts to step up its software and AI game against its global rivals, and in the latest edition, the company has reportedly started hiring ex-Nvidia engineers. The OEM believes that this move can help it to a greater extent.
On June 2, Nvidia’s chief scientist, Bill Dally, attended the 2nd AI EXPO in Washington D. C. It was conducted by the Special Competitive Studies Project.
During the exhibition, Dally talked about the US-China tech tensions and how these conditions are affecting Nvidia’s growth instead of halting Huawei’s achievements.
The executive mentioned that the US ban has now become an opportunity for China rather than a curse. US tried to stop China from advancing in the tech world by prohibiting chip exports like H20, but none of these steps proved very effective.
At the same time, the chief scientist stated that Huawei has been hiring many ex-Nvidia engineers to accelerate its AI and software growth. He said that in 2019, China’s AI researchers were less than 1/3rd of the total count, but the figure has now increased by 50%.
Bill Dally said:
“The US export controls have actually given China a lot of room for AI developments. Chinese AI researchers who used to write programs for Nvidia are now writing programs for Huawei.”

Further, Bill added that China’s share of global AI hardware is much less than that of the US. Yet, it has managed to master AI talent. He pointed out that the Huawei AI technologies still require improvements, but they are quite reliable solutions.
Huawei aims to offer better alternatives to Nvidia products in China. It is working on new AI chips and tech that can reduce its dependency on US technologies. But how far its efforts are proving worthy will be known in the future.
