Looks like Huawei is adopting Google’s strategy to push off Pangu models in the global AI race. The company has recently opened-sourced its two major artificial intelligence technologies that will help it gain some ground in the overseas markets.
Huawei has recently announced the open-source release of two Pangu AI models: Pangu 7B dense model and Pangu Pro MoE’s 72B hybrid expert model.
Other than these two, the company has also open-sourced an Ascend chip-based AI model with reasoning technology. According to Huawei, this is a game-changer step.
“This move is another key measure for Huawei to implement the Ascend ecosystem strategy, promote the research and innovative development of large model technology, and accelerate the application and value creation of AI in thousands of industries.”
Open-source means making the original source code freely available for customization. Pangu, as an open-source model, will enable developers and enterprises to test the AI-powered LLMs and easily modify them as per their requirements.
A senior analyst at Constellation Research said that Huawei’s game is quite similar to Google’s strategy, which is developing AI chips and models like its open-source Gemma models.
Huawei and Baidu played this move on Monday. It is also a helpful step for Chinese AI tech giants working on an open-source development strategy.
Following this move, many experts said that the company is not only firming its legs as an open-source LLM vendor but also trying to get out of the US sanctions.
Mark Einstein, the research director at Counterpoint, said:
“Huawei is not as strong as companies like DeepSeek and Baidu at the overall software level – but it doesn’t need to be. Its objective is to ultimately use open source products to drive hardware sales, which is a completely different model from others. It also collaborates with DeepSeek, Baidu, and others and will continue to do so.”
According to Mark, the open-source Huawei Pangu AI models will help the company to make its new space in developing countries and challenge global rivals.
