Google is busy with the last-minute tweaks for Android 16, but ahead of that, the company might face a big blow from the rumored partnership of Xiaomi and Huawei. Looks like Android will no longer be the “sole king” in the software world.
Some rumors have covered the internet with the statement – Xiaomi and Huawei will soon team up to develop a Google-free Android ecosystem in the global market.
The rumors add that Xiaomi will shake hands with Huawei and BBK (the parent firm of OPPO, Vivo, and OnePlus) to corner Google in the software world and launch GMS-free HyperOS build to develop an independent software ecosystem.
Xiaomi is probably inspired by Huawei in this case, a company that is ruling China with its self-developed and GMS-less software system called “HarmonyOS NEXT“.
A similar approach, like Huawei?
Huawei was slammed by U.S. sanctions back in 2019. Under this ban, the company was not only restricted from using advanced technology or chipmaking tools, but also from accessing GMS (Google Messages Services) on its phones.
Despite constant challenges, the company stayed determined and launched HarmonyOS software based on AOSP along with HMS (Huawei Mobile Services).
Over time, Huawei kept on improving its software and finally unveiled its self-developed Android-free HarmonyOS NEXT last year. It is said to be more efficient and smoother than Android in terms of animations, features, AI, and more.
Xiaomi’s Android-free HyperOS
Now rumors in the air say that Xiaomi – which is the world’s second-largest Android phone brand, will dump Google in the future. The company will focus on developing its own software ecosystem apart from Android and improving its services.
The Chinese OEM unveiled HyperOS in October 2023. It is a new operating system that integrates Xiaomi’s existing features, software architecture for various devices. It’s a refresh and rebuild software system offering a unified experience.
Risk Factors
As a brand, becoming independent is good. But it comes with a lot of risk factors. Xiaomi is one of the major brands to run an Android-based skin in the global and Chinese markets. Omitting Android can reduce its overall user base.
The company needs to make major amendments, which will eventually raise the cost for alternative apps and services. The step can further lose its shares in the market.
A complete Android elimination?
Well, it is unlikely for Xiaomi to completely avoid the use of Android. But the company may take certain initiatives. For instance, it could prioritize its services over Google and reduce its dependency on Google features.
It is unclear how far these rumors are true. But such a step could end the monopoly of the Android operating system in the global market.
