A new report says that TSMC has finally broken its silence and responded to the ‘Huawei AI chips’ controversy. After months of investigation, the chip producer has come up with its answers, denying allegations that it helped the Chinese company.
WccTech reports that TSMC responded to the news that it had knowingly supplied advanced AI chips to Huawei. The company said that it has always complied with the US regulations and hasn’t shipped any such products to the Chinese OEM since 2020.
The Taiwanese semiconductor firm broke its silence after the Semi Analysis report, which says Huawei managed to obtain AI processors from the TSMC foundry.
It has become possible, as some Chinese clients of TSMC allegedly delivered the Taiwanese firm’s chips to Huawei. Even though both Huawei and TSMC denied these reports.
Huawei-TSMC chip controversy came into the spotlight in October last year when US began investigating the Taiwanese firm for chip dealings with the Chinese OEM.
During the investigation, TechInsights revealed that one of the significant TSMC-made SoCs has appeared in the Huawei Ascend 910B AI processor. This discovery further fueled the US probe on this matter. After several rounds of investigation, the U.S. authorities could now fine TSMC a $1 billion penalty.

Huawei and TSMC said that they had not made any chip deals since 2020. However, this statement didn’t satisfy U.S. authorities’ question as the recently launched DeepSeek model (powered by Ascend 910C) draws level with foreign rivals.
The discovered TSMC chip in Ascend 910B is likely a result of accumulated components by Huawei during the 120-day grace period given in the first Trump era.
This indicates that TSMC didn’t breach any US restrictions. TSMC said that it has been complying with all applicable laws for its products and will continue to do so. It also mentioned taking immediate action to ensure compliance if it notices any suspicious orders in the time ahead.
