Matthijs de Ligt offers damning verdict of Amorim’s tactics vs Everton – Man United News And Transfer News

Despite Everton playing for over 80 minutes with a man disadvantage, Manchester United ended up losing 0-1 at Old Trafford on Monday.

This is the first time in Premier League history that the Red Devils have lost to an opponent who went down to 10. Another unwanted record broken by Ruben Amorim.

The Toffees naturally adopted a low block after taking the lead, defending deep and surprisingly, United played right into their hands.

Hardly anyone made runs from deep, with the team crossing aimlessly, while playing for set-pieces. Given United lacked a focal presence up top in the absence of Benjamin Sesko, it was not a smart ploy.

Shocking tactics

David Moyes’s side had the taller defenders, who loved the aerial bombardment as they repelled almost every ball delivered into the box.

The hosts attempted 38 crosses, and won nine corners. None of them mattered in the end. Matthijs de Ligt made this point clear after the game.

“It’s quite clear. A bad night for us. 70 minutes more or less 11 vs 10, conceded a goal and not creating many chances. A few but not enough for a match against 10. A disappointing night,” he explained to MUTV.

“From our side, we didn’t do enough. Didn’t make the runs or bodies into the box. They are strong in the air so we didn’t have the players to score from that.

Matthijs de Ligt was not impressed

“We basically played to their strengths. These are the main aspects, but we have to look at ourselves and it’s not good enough.

“We’ve been away and trained for a while together. I just think we lacked a bit of urgency in several situations. They get punished if you lack these urgency.

“If you don’t score, you lose this game. We lacked this hunger to make a difference on the most important moments.”

Amorim should have tweaked things in-game, given Joshua Zirkzee’s struggles on his own. The head coach’s substitution calls were also bizarre yet again. How United recover from this defeat will be interesting to see.
