The craving to consume these shelf-stable, ready-to-eat foods is stoked by urbanization and the transforming eating habits.

There is a response from manufacturers with healthier options, such as low-sodium, preservative-free, and organic products. However, be cautious, as although they are popular, some canned meats contain high amounts of sodium, saturated fats, and preservatives that may negatively impact health.

Potted meat products

Potted meat contains 2,418 mg of sodium per 100 grams of beef. Consuming less than half a cup of potted meat provides more than a day’s worth of sodium. It consists of mechanically separated chicken, which is formed into a paste-like product that, in many cases, contains fragments of bones and cartilage. Potted meat preservatives contain sodium nitrite, which can react with stomach proteins to form nitrosamines linked to cancer. A 2015 report established a rise in colorectal cancer risk by 18 percent with a regular intake of processed meat.

I had one neighbor who ate potted meat sandwiches every day. Once his doctor raised the red flag of his high blood pressure, we realized that a single can was almost one-third of his daily sodium intake. Replacing the old turkey slices with new ones immediately helped him improve his figures.

Vienna sausages

Vienna sausages contain 1,150mg of sodium per serving, as well as cholesterol and saturated fat. Prepared with mechanically separated poultry and pork, they are not only low in nutritional value but also contain sodium nitrites, which can transform into harmful substances in the stomach.
