FSU warns students about active shooter near Student Union


An FSU Alert, the university’s emergency notification and warning system, told students to seek shelter and await further instructions on Thursday.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — At least four people have been hospitalized after a reported “active shooter” situation on the Florida State University campus Thursday, multiple news outlets reported.

Florida State University issued an alert to students Thursday, saying an active shooter was reported in the area of the university’s student union.

A spokesperson of Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare told NBC News that four people have been hospitalized, and the hospital is “actively receiving patients” from the reported shooting. Details on their injuries and conditions were not provided.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said it is actively engaged in the incident on FSU’s campus and will provide additional infomation as soon as possible.

FSU canceled all classes and university events, including athletic events Thursday, and urged students to stay away from the main campus in Tallahassee.


Leon County Commissioner Brian Welch said on social media that the county is activating the Emergency Operations Center in support of law enforcement and healthcare partners.
