Reports spiked Wednesday morning that the popular music streaming service wasn’t working.
WASHINGTON — Spotify is back online after a major outage Wednesday morning that lasted about three hours that sent users flocking to social media with screenshots of error messages and other issues.
Downdetector, a website that tracks online service complaints, showed a big spike in user reports of Spotify issues Wednesday morning. The site showed a peak of 48,000 outage reports around 10 a.m. Eastern.
“All clear – thanks for your patience,” Spotify’s official support account said on X a little after noon Eastern time.
Spotify did not immediately provide more information about what might’ve caused the hours long outage, but noted in an earlier post that “reports of this being a security hack are false.”
Reports of the issue varied, though at least some who visited the streaming service’s desktop website were shown the message: “Error: Server Error. The server encountered a temporary error and could not complete your request. Please try again in 30 seconds.”
The Spotify mobile app was also impacted by the outage, continually showing users a loading screen when they tried to use it.
As tends to be the case with outages, the phrase “is spotify down” quickly became a trending topic on Google Trends and X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, as users worked to confirm they weren’t the only ones having problems.
Why was Spotify not working?
Beyond the company saying Wednesday’s outage wasn’t a “security hack,” no official reasoning has been announced yet.
Spotify’s official support account previously posted about recent issues on April 9 and March 6.
Spotify boasts having more than 675 million users today, including 263 million subscribers across over 180 markets worldwide.
