Huawei AI chips are becoming equivalent to some Nvidia processors, but the US Council believes that the foreign chipmaker will be far stronger in this field by 2027. It even shared a report showing the future faces of both tech giants.
Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) recently dropped its analysis on the Nvidia and Huawei AI chip progress rate. It has accepted that despite the US sanctions, the Chinese OEM has come a very long way in the AI chip industry.
The company has made rapid strides with the help of native chipmaker + semiconductor component suppliers. But of course, one can’t deny the fact that Huawei still lacks cutting-edge chipset-making technologies in its base.
Following this reason, the US Council said that Huawei will struggle to gain ground in the AI industry by 2027 at least, as Nvidia chips are still high in efficiency + performance.
US Council report compared the performance data and production state of both Huawei and Nvidia AI chips. Consequently, the US-made chips are 5 times more advanced and better than similar products of China.
In the results, the report predicts that Nvidia’s best AI chips will be about 17 times more powerful than Huawei’s processor by the second half of 2027.
The report further mentioned that Huawei will face difficulties in making an Nvidia H200-like product or a comparable chip for at least two years.
For Ascend 960, the US Council claims that the product could be on par with the latest H200 AI chipset. It adds that production capacity issues and a lack of advanced technologies will help Huawei to reach only 800,000 AI chips in 2025, 2 million in 2026, and about 4 million in 2027.
Note that it’s a prediction based on what Huawei and Nvidia are planning for their AI chips. These conclusions may change if the Chinese OEM makes a new move in this game.
