The on-and-off again saga of The Goonies redux is apparently over. It’s been confirmed by the head of Warner Bros. Pictures that there is a new entry in the works. She also said a new Gremlins movie is in the forecast.
“We’re super excited about Amblin developing with Chris Columbus, new entries in the Gremlins and Goonies franchises,” said Pam Abdy, Chair/CEO of Warner Bros. Pictures.
We’ll see. This has all been said before. In 2010 a Gremlins movie was said to be happening, but didn’t. A new Goonies was also rumored to be happening, but original star Martha Plimpton threw a flag on the play last September.
“People, there is no ‘Goonies 2’ script, there is no one ‘attached,’” She wrote on Instagram. “Spielberg is not directing, it’s not real.”
Gremlins hasn’t had a proper sequel since The New Batch back in 1990. And The Goonies is celebrating its 40th this year without a sibling.
This news is only half the story coming from Warner Bros. The studio is beaming after their unexpected Minecraft movie win and with the wind still beneath their wings have announced movies in The Matrix, and Beetlejuice franchises. One left field announcement was that they are making revivals of Practical Magic and The Bodyguard.
It’s a bold move for Warner Bros. who didn’t have a great year in 2024. Their Crown jewels were Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Dune Part 2. Perhaps they are taking a page from Disney’s playbook and throwing money at their own IPs. This strategy gave Disney a pair of billion dollar grossers last year with Inside Out 2 and Wolverine & Deadpool.
