What Is Artisan Style Pizza

Artisan pizza is a fancy way of saying homemade pizza. It’s usually made with yeast dough and fresh ingredients and is more rustic.

The shape doesn’t have to be perfectly round. It’s more artful, leaving the toppings, shape and overall outcome up to the pizza chef.

  • Prep Grill: Place the pizza stone on the grill in the center. Ignite the burner and set the grill function to grill/pizza. Set the temperature to 600F. Preheat for at least 10 minutes.

  • Prep Dough: Cut the pizza dough in half. Let rest at room temperature for 30 minutes. Stretch out the dough, so it’s about 1/4 inch thick.

  • Layer: Place the pizza dough on a floured pizza peel. Make sure it will slide off easily. Spread half of the pizza sauce on the dough, leaving the edges exposed. Top with cheese and pepperoni.

  • Bake: Transfer the pizza to the preheated pizza stone. Close the lid and cook for 5-8 minutes.

  • Slice: Once the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted, remove the pizza with the peel and transfer to a cutting board. Slice and enjoy.

  • Repeat: Use the remaining pizza dough and ingredients to make a second pizza.

Ingredients

  • Pizza Dough: While you can make your own, it’s way easier to buy pre-made pizza dough from the grocery store. Dough balls are usually sold in the deli section and come 16 ounces to a package.
  • Flour: Just a bit for dusting the surface, so your dough doesn’t stick.
  • Pizza Sauce: I just use the pre-made sauce in the jar. It’s usually found near the spaghetti sauce.
  • Shredded Cheese: Mozzarella cheese is a great option, so is shredded muenster cheese.
  • Pepperoni: This recipe is for classic pepperoni pizza, but you can use any pizza toppings you like.

  1. STEP TWO: Cut the pizza dough in half. Let rest at room temperature for 30 minutes. Stretch out the dough, so it’s about 1/4 inch thick.
PRO TIP: Don't use a rolling pin. It's best to stretch the dough. Watch the video above to see how I let gravity help with the stretching process.
  1. STEP THREE: Place the pizza dough on a floured pizza peel. Make sure it will slide off easily. Spread half of the pizza sauce on the dough, leaving the edges exposed. Top with cheese and pepperoni.
PRO TIP: Don't add too much sauce or too many toppings. If your pizza is too heavy, it will be hard to slide off the pizza peel.
  1. STEP FOUR: Transfer the pizza to the preheated pizza stone on the grill. Close the lid and cook for 5-8 minutes. For me, 6 minutes is the perfect timing.
  1. STEP FIVE: Once the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted, remove the pizza with the peel and transfer to a cutting board. Slice and enjoy.
PRO TIP: For added flair, top with hot honey, grated Parmesan cheese, red pepper flakes or fresh basil.
  1. STEP SIX: Use the remaining pizza dough and ingredients to make a second pizza. Make sure the pizza stone preheats for at least 10 minutes in between each cook.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you keep the dough from sticking

First, add a little bit of flour to the surface when you stretch out your dough, and add some flour to the pizza peel. Second, make sure you don’t have holes in your dough. If sauce leaks through the bottom, it can cause it to stick.

Why is it so hard to roll out the dough?

Cold dough is harder to stretch than room temperature dough. With cold dough, after you pull it, it will just shrink right back up. Room temperature dough will keep it’s shape better.

Why didn’t my dough rise?

If you buy fresh dough from the daily, use it within 1-2 days while the yeast is still active. If you refrigerate it for too long, it will lose its airiness.

what settings do you use to make Flexflame artisan pizza?

To make an artisan style pizza on the Ninja FlexFlame, set the function to grill/pizza and the temperature to 600F degrees.
