The latest release from independent French watchmaker Yema may have heritage roots, but it definitely doesn’t play by the rules. The new Yema Yachtingraff Croisière x seconde/seconde/ watch takes the brand’s famed 1960s sailing chronograph and hands it over to horology’s favorite vandal for a full-on artistic makeover. The collaboration resulted in a regatta timer that’s part street wear, part seafaring, and entirely playful.
Officially named the Yachtingraff — with two “Fs” because, according to seconde/seconde/, “rules are made to be sprayed over” — this collaborative chronograph pulls its inspiration from graffiti culture while retaining the functionality of the original Yachtingraf Crosière. The regatta countdown timer now sports hand-painted sub-dials, brash color blocking, and a cheekily defaced logo. If it looks like a rogue street artist got to the dial mid-race, that’s because one did.
The 38.5mm in diameter and 10.3mm stainless steel case features a vertical brushed finish with polished lugs, bezel, and bevels, paired with a double-domed Hesalite crystal that nods to vintage sailing chronographs. Inside ticks the 32,768-hertz Seiko VK63 hybrid meca-quartz movement, giving you a 60-minute chronograph, 24-hour register, and a central sweep seconds hand.
Naturally, the star of the show here is the black dial punctuated with plenty of color. At 3 and 9 o’clock, the asymmetrical subdials are painted in a bold, layered palette with thick and drippy textures. The “Big Eye” counter on the left still functions as a regatta countdown timer, echoing the classic blue, red, and white color scheme of the maiden 1968 model. Staying on theme, all the chrono hands on the dial are painted. The smaller, yet no less punchy, 24-hour counter sits on the right while the most discreet of the trio — the running seconds subdial — takes its customary position at 6 o’clock. Finishing off the artist’s interpretation of the dial are the applied faceted indexes, combined with steel hour and minute hands coated with Super-LumiNova BGW9.
The chronograph pushers flanking the winding crown carry forward the graffiti inspiration, shaped like tiny spray cans, complete with color-coded nozzles and major aerosol attitude. The crown is brushed and signed with the Yema logo, while the caseback is engraved with a final signature touch: “La Croisière, ma muse” — a tongue-in-cheek statement that roughly translates to “The cruise, my muse.”
Not forgetting its vintage origins, the new Yema Yachtingraff Croisière x seconde/seconde/ watch is mounted on an old-school-style textured Tropic rubber strap, furnished with a brushed steel pin buckle. Staying true to its intended maritime purpose, the watch is water-resistant to 100 meters.
The Yema Yachtingraff Croisière x seconde/seconde/ cleverly pairs one of the brand’s most iconic pieces with a rebellious canvas. It’s an ideal summer watch that’s street, speed, and swim-ready. Priced at $449 USD, pre-orders open Wednesday, June 25 at 4:00 PM CET / 10:00 AM EST, with shipping expected to begin in September.
