A Camera On Your Wrist? Future Apple Watch Could Redefine AI-Driven Features For Everyday Use

Apple is reportedly developing an Apple Watch with built-in cameras, aiming for a 2027 release as part of its broader push to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) more deeply into its hardware. This development, shared in Mark Gurman’s Bloomberg newsletter, suggests Apple’s continued innovation in wearable technology to enhance user experiences through AI-driven features.

According to Gurman, Apple is exploring different camera placements for its standard Series and rugged Ultra models. In the standard Series, the camera could be embedded within the display, similar to the iPhone’s front-facing camera. For the Ultra model, Apple is testing a design where the camera is positioned near the digital crown and side button, utilizing the watch’s additional space to facilitate easier object scanning. Differences in the watches’ thickness may also impact the camera’s placement.

The addition of cameras to the Apple Watch would enhance Apple Intelligence, a feature launched with iOS 18.1, which includes tools like Visual Intelligence. This AI tool uses the camera to identify objects and landmarks, providing relevant information to users. By equipping the Apple Watch with a camera, Apple could improve the functionality of these AI-driven features, allowing users to interact with their surroundings in new and innovative ways. However, Apple has not officially commented on these reports.

Rumors of an Apple Watch with a built-in camera date back to 2015, when there were suggestions that Apple was working on integrating a FaceTime camera into the watch’s second generation. Although that never materialized, the idea aligns with the latest report by Mark Gurman, which indicates Apple may be revisiting this concept with AI advancements. In 2015, AI was still in its infancy, and the camera was thought to be intended primarily for video calls, but today’s vision focuses on a more advanced AI-driven experience.

Apple is expanding its AI ecosystem by integrating features like infrared cameras in AirPods, potentially launching by 2026, and adding AI-powered hardware to the Apple Watch. These advancements aim to enable gesture recognition and environmental awareness, enhancing user interactions.

Apple’s broader strategy is to reduce reliance on external AI services like OpenAI and Google, focusing on developing its proprietary AI tools, such as the Visual Intelligence platform. If progress continues, the Apple Watch with a built-in camera and AI-equipped AirPods could be available by 2027.
