The qualification matches for the 1976 Asian Cup took place from March to November 1975. (The 1976 AFC Asian Cup was the 6th edition of the men’s AFC Asian held in Iran).
There were four groups with 31 teams however, several countries either withdrew or were expelled from the qualifying matches and the groups had to be reorganized. This badge represents Group 4 which featured originally Israel, Japan, Khmer Republic, Laos, Philippines, Republic of China, South Korea, and South Vietnam. However after Israel and the Republic of China were expelled and Laos, Philippines, and Khmer Republic withdrew, the groups were reorganized. Group 4 ultimately included Thailand, South Korea, Malaysia, South Vietnam, and Indonesia.
The matches were played in Bangkok, Thailand in March 1975. Malaysia would place on the top of the group followed by Thailand. Both countries would advance to the actual AFC Asian Cup the following year (although Thailand would withdraw).
