Here is another shot from our morning out with Kansas City Southern’s Fort Smith Dodger. The Heavener based local formally symboled RHV106 03 is heading railroad east to Fort Smith with a short train trailing two sharp four axle units in Southern Belle dress, KCS 2976 (GP40-3 rebuild originally blt. Feb. 1981 new for the railroad as GP40-2 796) and 2808 (GP40-3 rebuild originally blt. May 1966 as straight GP40 WP 3503).
The train is seen here in the morning light apprpaching the Cavanaugh Rd crossing now on Arkansas and Missouri Railroad rails at about about MP 420.9 (as measured from St. Louis). This is about MP 4.4 on the Fort Smith branch per KCS’ timetable account from MP 6 to MP 0.9 near downtown is via trackage rights dating back to BN and Frisco days. The Oklahoma border is just under 100 yards to the right of where I’m standing here.
To learn more history of this ex Frisco branch and how it became KCS check out the long form caption with this post.
