Cagliari is the capital of the island of Sardinia, a region of Italy. Cagliari’s Sardinian name Casteddu literally means castle. It has about 160,000 inhabitants, or about 400,000 including the outlying townships (metropolitan area): Elmas, Assemini, Capoterra, Selargius, Sestu, Monserrato, Quartucciu, Quartu Sant’Elena.An ancient city with a long history, Cagliari has seen the occupation of several civilisations. It was the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia (which in the 1861 became the Kingdom of Italy) from 1324 to 1720 and from 1798 to 1815. Seat of the important University of Cagliari and the Primate Roman Catholic archdiocese of Sardinia, the city is an important regional cultural, educational, political and artistic centre, known for its diverse Art Nouveau architecture, vibrant nightlife and several monuments. It is also Sardinia’s economic and industrial hub, having one of biggest ports in the Mediterranean sea, an international airport, and the 28th highest income rate in Italy, comparable to several Northern cities, such as Turin, Vicenza and Genoa.Cagliari has been inhabited since ancient times. It occupies a favourable position between the sea and a fertile plain, and is surrounded by two swamps (which afforded defences from enemies from inner lands) and is close to high and green mountains (to which people could evacuate if everything else was lost). Some testimonies of prehistoric inhabitants were found in Monte Claro and in Cape Sant’Elia.Under the name of Karalis it was established around the 7th century BC as one of a string of Phoenician colonies in Sardinia, including Tharros. Its foundation is expressly assigned to its opportune situation for communication with Africa as well as its excellent port, it doubtless assumed under their government the same important position it occupied under the Romans. It passed with the rest of the island first to the control of Carthage and then to Rome in 238 BC when the Romans defeated the Carthaginians. No mention of it is found on the occasion of the Roman conquest of the island; but during the Second Punic War, it was the headquarters of the praetor, T. Manlius, from whence he carried on his operations against Hampsicora and the Carthaginians,and appears on other occasions also as the chief naval station of the Romans in the island, and the residence of the praetor.
Cagliari è un comune italiano di 157.222 abitanti , capoluogo della provincia di Cagliari e della Regione Autonoma della Sardegna. Cagliari è una delle 15 città italiane di rango metropolitano. La sua area metropolitana (comprendente i comuni conurbati di Cagliari, Monserrato, Selargius, Quartucciu, Quartu Sant’Elena, Capoterra, Elmas, Assemini e Sestu) supera i 369.000 abitanti, che divengono 465.000 con l’agglomerato urbano diffuso.Cagliari, dalla storia plurimillenaria che ha lasciato tracce nell’intera città, è sede universitaria e arcivescovile. È il centro amministrativo storico dell’isola essendo stata , sotto la denominazione di Caralis , capoluogo della provincia di Sardinia et Corsica durante il periodo romano e successivamente capitale del Regno di Sardegna , che in seguito divenne Regno d’Italia , dal 1324 al 1861 . Il suo porto è classificato "internazionale" per via della sua importanza nel panorama nazionale e sopranazionale ; svolge funzioni commerciali, industriali, turistiche e di servizio per passeggeri .In passato Cagliari era chiamata Krly dai fenicio-punici mentre in latino era Càralis o al plurale Calares o Karales . Durante l’epoca Giudicale il centro della città divenne quello che oggi è il quartiere Santa Gilla e in Sardo medioevale veniva pertanto chiamata "Santa Igia". Con l’arrivo dei Pisani venne identificata nei documenti pisani come Kastrum Karalis e successivamente dagli aragonesi come Castel de Càller in catalano antico. Successivamente all’affermarsi del castigliano durante il dominio spagnolo il nome divenne Callari e infine nel periodo sabaudo il nome venne semplicemente translitterato in italiano ottenendo l’attuale Cagliari. In lingua sarda il nome attuale Casteddu viene dall’identificazione della città con il quartiere fortificato di castello edificato durante la dominazione pisana.La città di Cagliari è situata nella zona meridionale della Sardegna. Si trova in mezzo al Golfo degli Angeli, uno dei più belli di tutto il Mediterraneo, e si sviluppa intorno alla Sella del Diavolo, e ad est i monti dei Sette Fratelli, ad ovest i monti di Capoterra e a sud della la pianura del Campidano. Ha inoltre in comune con Roma, Lisbona e Istanbul il fatto di essere stata costruita su 7 colli che identificano altrettanti quartieri "storici": Castello, Tuvu Mannu, Tuvixeddu, Monte Claro, Monte Urpinu, Colle di Bonaria, Colle di San Michele.
Il clima della città è tipicamente mediterraneo, con inverni miti ed estati calde e siccitose.
