The Face of the Republican Party: Trump’s Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, Has Echoed False Russian Conspiracy Theories about U.S.-Funded Bioweapon Labs in Ukraine
Tulsi Gabbard was a Democratic Congresswoman from Hawaii from 2013 to 2021. In 2024, she switched to the Republican Party and endorsed Donald Trump for president. After his election, he nominated her as his Director of Intelligence, which sparked controversy for several reasons. She has never held a senior intelligence position, having only served on the House Committee on Homeland Security for two years.
She has repeatedly criticized the United States’ involvement in global crises. After Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, she repeated false Russian propaganda that the U.S. had funded over twenty-five bioweapon labs in the country. She stated, “This war and suffering could have easily been avoided if Biden Admin/NATO had simply acknowledged Russia’s legitimate security concerns.”
She was opposed to any U.S. intervention in the Syrian civil war, which she viewed as a “regime change war” by the West, as reported by The Independent . In 2017, she met secretly with Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad. Assad had deployed chemical weapons against his own people and Syrian rebels during protests against his regime. After her trip, she stated, “Let the Syrian people themselves determine their future, not the United States, not some foreign country.” Yet, despite her anti-interventionist beliefs, she does not support a cease-fire in Gaza, calling Hamas a “threat that needs to be defeated militarily and ideologically”.
When Trump nominated Gabbard, Democratic Congresswoman and former CIA officer Abigail Spanberger stated, “Not only is [Gabbard] ill-prepared and unqualified, but she traffics in conspiracy theories and cozies up to dictators like Bashar-al Assad and Vladimir Putin.”
