Weymouth - Jubilee Clock Prior to 1953

The Postcard

A British Photogravure Series postcard that was published by B. B. of London. The card was posted in Weymouth on Thursday the 13th. August 1953 to:

Mr. & Mrs. E. W. King,
8, Mayfair Avenue,
Whitton,
Middlesex.

The message on the divided back of the card was as follows:

"Weather glorious.
The perfect holiday,
with plenty of swimming.
Brenda is having the
time of her life.
Kind regards,
Bert & Marjorie".

The Weymouth Clock Tower

Weymouth’s Jubilee Clock Tower was built to commemorate Queen Victoria’s 50 years of reign in 1887. The tower was paid for by public subscription, with ÂŁ100 having been collected during celebrations on Her Majesty’s Jubilee day of the 21st. June 1887.

The Jubilee Committee then approached the Council with the idea for the clock tower, which was readily accepted. As fundraising did not amount to enough to provide the clock itself, Sir Henry Edwards donated one, while the gas company agreed to keep the clock illuminated for free in perpetuity. Weymouth Corporation provided the stone base.

The cast and wrought-iron clock tower was unveiled on the 31st. October 1888. Erected on Weymouth’s esplanade, it was originally set in front of the Esplanade and jutted out onto the sands of Weymouth Beach.

In the 1920’s, the clock was set back from the beach as the esplanade was extended around it to protect the beach from the encroachment of shingle from the eastern end. The clock tower was also painted in bright colours during the same decade. It is Grade II listed.

Weymouth

Weymouth is a seaside town in Dorset, England, situated on a sheltered bay at the mouth of the River Wey on the English Channel coast. The town is 11 kilometres (7 mi) south of Dorchester and 8 kilometres (5 mi) north of the Isle of Portland. The town’s population in 2011 was 52,300.

Weymouth is a tourist resort, and its economy depends on its harbour and visitor attractions; the town is a gateway situated halfway along the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site on the Dorset and east Devon coast, important for its geology and landforms.

Weymouth Harbour has provided a berth for cross-channel ferries, and is home to pleasure boats and private yachts, and nearby Portland Harbour is home to the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, where the sailing events of the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games were held.

The history of the borough stretches back to the 12th century; including involvement in the spread of the Black Death, the settlement of the Americas, the development of Georgian architecture, and a major departure point for the Normandy Landings.

Brigitte Macron

So what else happened on the day that Bert and Marjorie posted the card?

Well, the 13th. August 1953 marked the birth in Amiens, France of Brigitte Macron who is currently (2021) aged 68.

Born Brigitte Marie-Claude Trogneux, she is a French schoolteacher who is the wife and former teacher of Emmanuel Macron, current President of France.

Brigitte Macron – The Early Years

Brigitte was the youngest of six children of Simone (née Pujol; 1910–1998) and Jean Trogneux (1909–1994), the owners of the five-generation Chocolaterie Trogneux, founded in 1872 in Amiens. The company, now known as Jean Trogneux, is run by her nephew, Jean-Alexandre Trogneux.

The Career of Brigitte Macron

Brigitte taught literature at the Collège Lucie-Berger in Strasbourg in the 1980’s. By the 1990’s, she was teaching French and Latin at LycĂ©e la Providence, a Jesuit high school in Amiens.

It was at that high school that she and Emmanuel Macron first met. He attended her literature classes, and she was in charge of the theatre class that he attended. Their relationship has attracted controversy, as she was his senior by 25 years, and Macron has described it as:

"A love often clandestine, often hidden,
misunderstood by many before imposing
itself".

The Politics of Brigitte Macron

In 1989, Brigitte Macron (then Auzière) unsuccessfully ran for a seat on the city council of Truchtersheim. It was the only time she ran for office.

In 2017, Brigitte Macron played an active role in her husband’s presidential campaign; a top adviser was quoted as saying that:

"Her presence is essential
for him".

During his campaign, Emmanuel Macron stated that upon his winning of the French presidency:

"My wife will have the role that
she always had with me, she will
not be hidden".

He proposed creating an official “First Lady” title (as the spouse of the French president currently holds no official title) coming with her own staff, office and a personally allocated budget.

However following Macron’s election as president, and a petition against his proposal that gathered more than 275,000 signatures, the French government announced that Brigitte Macron would not hold the official title of First Lady, and would not be allocated an official budget.

In an interview with French magazine Elle, Brigitte stated that a soon-to-be published transparency charter would clarify her role and accompanying resources, including the composition and size of her staff.

The Personal Life of Brigitte Macron

On the 22nd. June 1974, she married banker André-Louis Auzière, with whom she had three children, Sébastien Auzière, an engineer, Dr. Laurence Auzière-Jourdan, a cardiologist, and Tiphaine Auzière, a lawyer.

They resided in Truchtersheim until 1991, when they moved to Amiens. Brigitte, at the age of 40, met 15-year-old Emmanuel Macron in La Providence High School in the year 1993, where she was a teacher and he was a student and a classmate of her daughter Laurence. She divorced Auzière in January 2006 and married Macron in October 2007.

Macron caught the coronavirus over Christmas 2020. Brigitte tested positive on the 24th. December 2020, but presented only light symptoms and was negative six days later. During that period, she stayed at the official presidential residence, the Élysée Palace, while the president worked at another residence outside Paris.

Her office said the information regarding her condition was not made public at the time as it had no impact on her public agenda. She had since made a full recovery, they added.
