Back to the Moon (Lecture 2): For Science and Exploration

  1. Not enough researchers – they are all dead no funding for researcher

  2. Huh…. what am I not understanding about physics here?
From 47:15 to 48:03 , Pascal Lee mentions radiation being increasingly problematic near water/ice deposits. That seems to rub counter to everything I have heard in terms of radiation protection on board spacecraft of on planet surface, where I have repeatedly heard and understood that substances with high hydrogen content, like polyethylene and water , are good absorbers and/or deflectors of high-energy particles coming from the sun, as well as cosmic rays (X-ray and Gamma).
What gives here? Is there an aspect of high energy radiation that interacts differently with hydrogen-rich compounds depending on their placement in relation to the organism?

  4. Why Go "to dig up crashed UFOs and find out if it's hollow with a alien city in it.

  5. India is the first country to go to South Pole of moon , Chandrayaan 2🇮🇳

  6. Lol @ mike pence saying go to the moon. His religion says god created the “firmament” go ahead and study up on that…

  7. “Lunar Gateway, which will be studying the effects of radiation & microgravity… But will be inhabited only 40 days/year.” All of this WONDERFUL science for 37 SLS launches at a total cost of $60B. We already KNOW about the effects of extended exposure to microgravity. And, we KNOW we have to do whatever we can to protect astronauts from solar flares & cosmic radiation. While we can protect astronauts from solar flares with 150 cm of water/food/supplies, we need 5-6 m of dirt to protect them from cosmic radiation.
The Delta-V required to get to the moon from LEO, to the moon from LEO, from LEO to Mars, from Mars to LEO, to L-2 from LEO & from L-2 to LEO. What. are we gaining with a Lunar Gateway that will require the same Delta-V to get to from LEO, the moon & Mars & to return to LEO as we’d need to get to the moon, L-2 & Mars & back to LEO? What are we gaining for the $60B & this extra expenditure of Delta-V that we aren’t going to get from actual inhabited moon bases? &, As the resources we’d use (water ice, titanium, gold, platinum, H-3, etc.) are available on the moon but not in Cis-lunar Orbit, how is the Lunar Gateway going to be better & more efficient at getting those resources than actual moon colonies? Remember, $60B (that’s the conservative estimate) LOP-G is going to cost could conceivably pay to develop New Armstrong, Starship, both Blue Moons, Lunar/Mars/interplanetary Nuclear Reactors, specialized robots, spacesuits, habs & greenhouses, & then pay to put all of these (with 100’s of well-equipped, well-housed & well-supplied colonists/astronauts) on both the moon & Mars. So, What are we getting for all of that money, extra exposure to cosmic radiation & microgravity & that extra Delta-V?!?

  8. All lieing bastards no one has gone to moon and no one will.

  9. How is the “Lunar Outpost” going to “teach us how to live in deep space” when it doesn’t include artificial gravity or some sort of food farming/production facilities, & when all of the modules & everything in them is built on & launched from the earth? How is it going to facilitate LANDING on the moon when Jim Bridenstine says it will require 37 SLS launches (Min. cost/launch – $1.25B, Max. cost/launch -$2.5B & Mean cost/launch – $1.8B) costing a minimum of $60B to assemble from parts made & launched from the earth?

Moon Direct would have a crewed moon base up & running with 8 total launches (4 FHE for 4 Blue Moons – 2 Cargo & 2 Crewed + 4 F9 to bring up astronauts & fuel for the Landers) at less than the cost of one SLS Block 1 launch. Specs on FH & F9 –

  10. We are having a Sputnik moment in the works with the Star Hopper, the Falcon Heavy and the Starship.

  11. Build Lunar-habitat shells using moon dust mixed with water. In -250°F they would be as hard as concrete and would – thanks to the water – shield the inhabitants from radiation. The best place to build would be at the low point of a suitable crater, to afford some protection from proximal meteor-strike debris .

  12. I love space. But, is it possible that this new moon Mania is just an irrational attempt to relive The Glory Days? Are we about to waste trillions on a national vanity project? Just saying…

  13. Predictions: Musk puts a lander on the moon in 2026 and people on the moon in 2028. Bezos puts a lander on the moon in 2028 and people on the moon in 2030. Musk sends the first lander to Mars in 2028-29 and the first people leave to land on Mars 2032-33. Fourteen years is a long time but no one wants to be the first rocket with dead astronauts floating around in deep space.

  14. This talk has me at the edge of my chair. As I'm approaching the mid to late Autumn of my years, it would be a joy to observe our species making its way out and into deep space. One dream is for there to be built numerous and humongous outposts near to the heliopause. 🌻

  15. "A paradigm shift"… In other words (i.e. Not NASA talk & Contractor non-sense) is the President & VP; sat down with multiple people. They quickly determined this Horsehockey 'WAY' the NASA/Contractor cabal has been 'doing things'; low these past several Decades Doesn't work!!

The VP then at the direction of the President; reconvened the National Space Council. They haven't been following the NASA boilerplate of 'doing things'. No, they have been getting too work addressing Why we (US) haven't done anything in Manned Spaceflight since Dec. 1972 (1972 for Cr@ps sake!!!!!) but go straight up and turn left. Yes, I'm fully aware we built the ISS (Ahem) lofted & repaired Hubble.

I applaud the emphasis the administration has put in getting things Done! Set a clear goal(s) and a time frame (within reason) and GET IT DONE!! We (US) went from Al Shepard's 15 min sub-orbital 'hop' too landing on & returning 2 crews from the Moon; in less than 9 yrs. Nine years people!! LockMart has been 'working' on Orion for OVER a decade with (1) 4 hr. flight too just beyond the boundary of LEO thus far. Too make this even More disgusting; SLS which is supposed too be the launch vehicle for Orion; is still in the shop being built.

The 'paradigm shift' he talks about, isn't some new implementation of technology. No, it's a new way of Doing things. Because ever since the crew of Apollo 17 returned from the lunar surface; in Dec. of 1972(!!!!!!!) the NASA-Contractor cabal; has turned every single work assignment or project into a 'career'! Every single thing, that NASA has been tasked with by previous administrations/congresses; has been met with the boilerplate response from the NASA-Contractor cabal of: "It'll take 20-30 years at a minimum too accomplish this". Never mind what it is, "It'll take 20+ years"… ENOUGH already!!! As VP Pence said; "We're not beholden too any contractor. If you Can't (or Won't) get it done in the time frame spelled out; we'll find one that Will".

I was 5 yrs. old when Apollo 11 landed in the Sea of Tranquility. My Dad worked in the engineering dept. at Aerojet in support of the Gemini/Titan booster program and then on the SPS engine for Apollo. He also worked briefly on the NERVA program before that was cancelled. I grew up a child of US Dominance in Manned Spaceflight! We went too the Moon and did other things at that very special time in out country's history. Then we stopped. Then we accepted mere token actions, because in the end, that's what we were left with from Shuttle. Now we pay for very expensive seats on Soyuz. The launch system the Soviets were using while we (US) were flying too the Moon on the awesome and Unmatched Saturn V; which lofted the equally impressive Apollo CSM & LM tandem. The US had plans for Manned flights too Mars by the early 1980's! I graduated High School in 1982. We were supposed too have already Been on Mars by then! Dr. Von Braun even had laid out detailed plans for using Mars as the stepping off point to explore & Utilize the Vast resources that await us in the Asteroid belt. But we stopped. We had 'other' things too do. (ahem)

Thank you Mr. President! Thank you Mr. Vice President! Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for seeing just how Wrong that was too have 'stopped'. Thank you for setting clear, defined goals with a clearly defined time frame too accomplish said goals. But mostly, thank you for establishing a time frame that ISN'T Decades into the future before anything gets done!

  16. And this is supposed to be new? I was reading picture books about exactly this back in school in the mid 60s. Everything in this video ought to have been an immediate follow on from Apollo. Get up to speed with space exploration, the public program is 40 plus years behind.

  17. Hello, where is the lecture number 1?

  18. "a dollar"? what a cheap skate

  19. If they go to the moon at lunar night they can build bases without fear of solar radiation, and get a good 14 days (less likely) of building before having to return. And once a base is built then solar storms will be nothing to fear

  20. It's not the Moon or Mars, it's the Moon AND Mars. We didn't decide to explore the arctic before the antarctic, we did both at the same time, while conquering the west. We will do both.

  21. meh…the only reason the US is going back to the moon with gov backing is because china is ramping up to do it….propaganda at its finest… SMH
and bezos is a prick…i hope he fails big time and it brings his whole empire to the ground..gov subsidies for the richest person on earth…GET FUCKED

  22. And we all know how quickly or slowly going out to vote can change things lol. If its something that's good for all of mankind and brings us up as a people it takes centuries to change anything. But if its something hateful or racist and bring us all down as a people it goes into effect quick as hell! hint hint lol

  23. "There's two things that kids like in science: dinosaurs and space"

  24. lol that paradigm shift he's talking about is all the crazy bs Elon musk is stirring up right now in different industries. Looks like chaos to everyone on the inside. but Elon is outside of the box. In time things will start to become clear and equalize and the stock market will be less jittery lol.

  25. China quiere revelar la verdad para avanzar en esta sociedad pero el gobierno de eeuu no se por que se opone a este avance.. es un beneficio para la humanidad clara…

  26. Huh. A bouncing rover, huh.
